The winning art work from the 9th District for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition unfortunately has been disqualified.  

(2013 미국 연방의회 미술대회 제9지구에서 수상한 천모 양의 작품은 아쉽게도 실격처리 됐습니다)

Students studying and experimenting with art will often use references to other works they have seen and studied, which was the situation here. 

(예술을 공부하는 학생들은 종종 그들이 공부하며 봐 온 다른 작품을 참조하기도 합니다. 천모 양의 경우도 마찬가지입니다)

It is our understanding the student artist received permission from the original artist and was up front and honest about the work.  

(우리는 그 작품이 원작자에게서 사용 허락을 받은 것으로 알고 있고, 천모 양도 우리에게 그 사실을 알렸습니다)

However, the Art Competition’s guidelines state that the artwork “must be original in concept, design, and execution” and it was determined the winning piece was in violation of this rule.  

(그러나 이 대회 규칙은 컨셉, 디자인, 제작 모두 본인이 원작자여야 하기 때문에 천모 양을 실격 처리했습니다)

The following is a statement from Congressman Smith on this matter.

“This disqualification is very unfortunate because the student winner is a bright, inspired, responsible artist, and was up front and honest about the work.  There was simply a misunderstanding about the guidelines of the competition.  I appreciate the many respectful emails we have received bringing this issue to attention. 

(이번 실격은 매우 유감입니다. 왜냐하면 천모 양은 엄청 밝고 열정적이고 책임감있는 예술가라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 천모 양은 자신의 작품에 대해 솔직하고 정직했다고 봅니다. 단지 이번 대회 규칙에 단순 오해가 있었던 것으로 여겨집니다. 이번 사건을 향한 많은 관심과 정중한 메일에 감사 인사를 드립니다.)

 However, I have been shocked and very upset by some of the inappropriate and threatening online posts that have been directed at the student artist.  

(하지만 천모 양을 향한 몇몇 부적절하고 공격적인 게시물로 놀라고 당황스럽기도 했습니다)

They show a clear misunderstanding of this situation.  

(그들은 이 상황에 대해 큰 오해를 하고 있는 것 같이 보였습니다)

These cyberbullying attacks against this student artist are preposterous.   These unacceptable posts should stop immediately, as this was not a case of dishonesty, but one of a simple misunderstanding.” 

(천모 양을 향한 이런 악플은 말도 안됩니다. 이런 받아들일 수 없는 글들은 당장 그만둬 주세요. 이건 천모 양이 거짓말한 게 아니라 단순 오해였습니다)
